LED backlighting in notebooks may reach 30% in 2008
posted June 28th, 2007 by J.D. Hodges
Despite all the recent announcements of LED backlit laptops, only 3-5% of laptops shipped this year will utilize LEDs. However, that percentage may rise to 30% of laptops in 2008. This is according to CH Wu, chairman of Unity Opto Technology (a Taiwan-based LED packaging house) as reported by DigiTimes.
LED backlighting has a number of environmental advantages over CCFL backlighting, the most prominent being a complete elimination of mercury. LED baclkights should also bring thinner packaging, better color fidelity and longer battery life to notebooks.
